Welcome to the Moander Webpage

I decided to try to put all this info on a webpage so it will be easier to pass along.  Some of the information I will just give you the links and you can search the sites for yourself.  I find this is sometimes more useful because it gives you added information.

I started my search into the Moander line by request.  My nephew Christopher Moander had said he would be interested in the family history but didn't really have time to do it himself.  Since I have more time on my hands than I would like, I thought I would see what I could find.  All my research has been strictly online and I haven't gotten into public records.  A lot of questions emerge when you try to figure out who John Peter was and where did he come from.  It has been passed down that a name change occurred somewhere before or shortly after he arrived in Lee County, Iowa.  The name change is thought to be from Peterson or Pederson.

The earliest MOANDER that I have been able to find is a John Peter Moander.  A listing of his burial in the Scandinavian Cemetery in Lee County indicates that he was born 26 December 1833.  This also identifies his wife as Katherine Moander, a son Charles and a daughter Serena.  Addition review of the listing identifies an Amanda C Moander Skog, married to John Skog.  A Suzanne Moander married to Wayne Lee McClain.  and Edward Moander married to Nellie Johnson.  From this information I know that John Peter Moander was from Norway or Sweden.  Another Scandinavian Cemetery listing for Norwegian burials does not list Moander.

I then found obituaries for the following people.  Amanda Christine Skog, daughter of John P. Moander and Katherine Swanson Moander.  Julie A. Martin, daughter of Suzanne Moander McClain.  Arthur Clarence Skog, son of John and Augusta Moander Skog.

Mrs. Amanda Christine Skog of Keokuk R. R. 2, died at 4:15 o’clock Tuesday in the home of a nephew, Clarence G. Skog, whom she reared as a son. She had been in failing health for the last two years and seriously ill for the last six weeks.
Born August 18, 1867, in Smoland, Sweden, she was the daughter of John P. and Katherine Swanson Moander and came to the United States with her parents at the age of three years. She has lived in this community practically all of her life.
In 1901 she married John R. Skog in Montrose, he preceded her in death February 16, 1926
She was a member of the Old Swedish Mission church.
Surviving are two brothers, Charles Moander of Keokuk and Lewis Moander of Montrose R. F. D.; the nephew, Clarence G. Skog; a grandson, John Skog, of Nederland, Texas and three great grandchildren.
Very friendly and thinking of others rather than herself, Mrs. Skog raised a stepson Arthur Skog, as well as the nephew. The stepson died March 19, 1945, and she was also preceded in death by two sisters, Anna and Serena, and two brothers, Edward and Albert Moander.
The funeral was held in the Schmidt Memorial home with the Rev. Morrel C. Ruby of Montrose officiating. Music was by Mrs. James Wardlow and Mrs. D. T. Phillips with Mrs. Marjorie Bullis at the organ. The pallbearers were Charles Gabel, Irvin Moander, Carroll Moander, Herbert Moander, Harold Larson and Charles Juhl. Burial was in the Scandinavian cemetery.

This information gives some clues as to where in Sweden they came from.  Smoland is a state in Sweden and is broken down into parishes.  The naming patterns in Sweden are very confusing and hard to follow.  So IF a name change occurred after arrival into the US, it will be really hard to trace it much further.  The obituary identifies all the children of John P and Katherine Moander as the following : Amanda Christine, Charles, Lewis, Anna, Serena, Edward and Albert.  It also mentions a stepson Arthur Skog.

Arthur Clarence Skog, 55 a life-long resident of Keokuk and this community, died at six o’clock Monday evening at his home on the Main street road near the Ambrosia Lane. Mr. Skog, a friendly, considerate man, had suffered a paralytic stroke nearly four years ago and had borne his long suffering and illness with admirable patience and fortitude.
A son of John and Augusta Moander Skog, he was born in Keokuk on May 3, 1890, and after reaching adulthood he became a registered pharmacist, working for a number of years at both the Kiedaisch and Engelhardt drug stores here. Later he became a salesman.
Mr. Skog was married at Quincy, Illinois on March 22, 1911, to Pansy Young who survives along with one son, John M. Skog; two grandchildren, and his stepmother, Mrs. Amanda Skog of Montrose. He was preceded in death by his parents and one sister who died in infancy.
Mr. Skog was baptized in the Methodist faith and was a member of Eagle Lodge No. 12, A. F. and A. M.
The Schmidt Memorial home was in charge of arrangement with burial in the Montrose cemetery.

This leaves us with a bit of a mystery.  Who is Augusta Moander Skog.  Is this a misprint?  We know that from Amanda C Skog's obit that she raised a stepson Arthur.  Was there another daughter  from John P and Katherine Moander?  I guess the thing to do is try to find out who John Skog was married to the first time.

We know that Julie A. Martin is daughter of Wayne L. McClain and Suzanne Moander.  Suzanne Moander is the daughter of Carrol and Eleanor Moander.    Carrol Moander is the son of Edward Moander.  Edward Moander is listed in the cemetery with wife Nellie Johnson who died in 1916.    There is a Carol A Kay also listed with Edward Moander in the cemetery record.  She was born in 1914, died in 1988. Is she possibly wife #2?   Edward himself died in 1933 according to the cemetery list.  HOWEVER, an entry in the 1930 Federal Census, Lee County, Iowa - District 15 identifies  Edward Moander with wife Helen.  Edward is listed as being 49 yrs old and Helen as 36.  The cemetery listing tells us that Edward was born in 1881.  This would make him 49 in 1930.  The obit for Julie A. Martin also tells us that she is survived by her grandmother Eleanor Moander.

Albert Moander is listed in the 1930 Federal Census - Lee County Iowa - District 18.  Albert is 51 yrs old, born in Iowa, parents from Sweden, and says he is a farmer.  He is married to Elizabeth L., age 50, born in Iowa, father from Germany.  The place from which the mother came is unreadable.  There are three children listed as living at home.  Hazel E., age 28 and single.  Mable A (spelled like it is on the census), age 26 and single.  Neither daughter list an occupation.  Herbert M., age 23 and single.  Lists his occupation as an electrician.

Edward and Charles Moander are listed in the 1920 Federal Census - Lee County Iowa.  Both men are "roomers" in the household of Samuel L and Nancy V. Gregory.  Charles is listed as being 42 yrs of age, Single, able to read and write, born in Iowa, father is from Sweden, mother tongue - Swedish, Mother is from Sweden, mother tongue - Swedish.  Able to speak English, listed as an Electrician and is a contractor.  Edward is listed as age 38, married, able to read and write, born in Iowa, parents are same as above.  He speaks English, listed as a carpenter.  This leaves a few questions.  Edward is married but to whom?  His wife Nellie Johnson Moander died in 1916.  He as two sons, Irwin and Carrol that are living with him and wife Helen in the 1930 Census.  Where are the sons?  And when did he remarry?
