Before & During the Show Part 2
When your bird is grown and trained, the next task is preparing him or her for the show. Some birds need to be washed before each show, it is best to wash them 2 to 3 days before a show.
Before you start washing your birds, always check for problem areas, such as dirty wing tips or dirt around the vent. This will allow you to concentrate on the areas that need the most attention. Now fill three five gallon pails with warm water. Place a small amount of dish soap in one , a small amount of vinegar in another and in the last pail leave it clear water.
Start by dipping your bird in the soap water, clean well. Always rub straight back on feathers so you that you do not damage them. Next do the same to the vinegar water, then the clear water. Now rap the bird in a towel and dry ,being careful of the feathers. Put a small amount of Vaseline on the comb and beak, wattles, feed and legs. Place the bird in clean sawdust and let it finish drying. It is best to provide a roost so that at night the feathers, feet and legs do not become soiled.
When you get to the show and before you place your bird in it’s cage, you should use a clean dry cloth to rub down the bird down with, (real well). This will pick up dust that has accumulated on the feathers . Aways straighten feathers before placing bird in the cage. Remember when removing or returning your bird always go head first, taking care not to bend it’s feathers.
At a show one of the judges made a statement that is worth listening to. He said, “ There are better birds in the show, better than these, (first & second) place but they have not been cleaned and conditioned. So I can not place them, in the condition they are in.”
Hope this helps, Good Luck - Derek
