Something From A Member
Derek Raymo
Conditioning
First a properly trained bird depends on the bird itself some moderns will practically train themselves. Some are easy to train and others are more difficult ,if not impossible. The breeder should start the training process early, when the chicks are a few weeks old. Any young bird that shows prospect of being your best is well worth the time and effort on your part.
Begin with just catching and handling the young birds, getting them used to being caught, rubbed and petted in general. About the time the cockerels start crowing, keep them a little hungry and coming to you expecting something to eat. In just a short time they will come to you expecting there feed. About the time you have dubbed your cockerels and pretty much know which are your best birds, start training them in show type cages.
Handle the birds several times a day in conjunction with giving them feed. It helps to talk to your birds to train them. After you have done your best training at home, the finale training comes by showing them in as many shows as possible. Having them handled by strangers, this being a judge, who knows how to handle them properly.
Derek pulled this information from the OLD ENGLISH GAME BANTAMS AS BRED AND SHOWN IN THE UNITED STATES By F.P. Jeffrey & William Richardson
Next time What to do at the show.
--------------Did You Know----------------
The first official governmental recognition of poultry came with the publishing of the Agricultural Census in 1840.
It is estimated that between 1890 and 1970, up to 10 million Americans kept poultry.
