To photograph snow you need contrast. To get contrast on a snowy object you need contrasty light that casts shadows on the snowy surface. Hmmm? The following photo was shot at night. I wanted to test out the 700si camera's built in flash when used in conjunction with wireless remote flashes in the P Program mode, the No Brainer Mode. The resulting test was impressive.

Photographing snow has got to be one of the toughest subjects, and snow at night even tougher. The photo, Snowman at Night shows how beautifully the Maxxum Flash System performs in such an impossible situation.
I shot it as a test for the 700si built in flash because I had not used it very much and wanted to see how it performed. No situation could be more challenging. I positioned the remote flashes as shown in the diagram. (There was no special reason why I used the 3500 in the back, I just as easily could have switched itıs place with the 5400) I positioned the 3500 in the back so as to backlight the snowman, hoping to highlight his arms. With the 5400 placed at the side I figured it would cast shadows, bringing out texture in the snow. I then assumed the 700si built in flash would fill in the shadows cast from the 5400. I was also wondering if the 3500 flash hidden behind the snowman would pick up the signal from the 700si & fire. Everything was set in the P program mode, no ratio settings or anything else. I fired away & the results were PERFECT!
