MAY WINNER - The winner of NorthNet's Three Free Months Contest
for the month of May was Judith Chase of Canton. The random drawing is
held on the last day of each month, and all residential NorthNet
customers are eligible.
WEBFEST WINNERS - As many of you will recall, NorthNet recently
wrapped up its first ever high school Webfest Contest. First place went
to LaFargeville, second went to Clifton-Fine, and a tie for third went
to Beekmantown and Saranac Lake central schools.
NorthNet recently received a letter from the LaFargeville team
telling us what they were able to purchase for their school with their
winning $5,000. The letter read as follows:
"Thank you so much for sponsoring the Webfest Contest. With the
$5,000.00 we received, we have purchased a 1 GIG MHZ Gateway laptop
computer with 512 mg RAM, 32 GIG Hard Drive, a DVD, and network
interface card. This advanced laptop computer will allow us to work
with 3D modeling on the computer.
"We also purchased a software program called 3D Studio Max with
Character Studio. This program is used in the computer graphics
industry to create animation. The documentation alone is 5 large books!
"We also purchased 2 web cameras. We will use these cameras to
video conference. We plan to use the laptop with the cameras to video
conference from home. The students in the Advanced Computer
Applications class will be allowed to sign out the laptop and take it
home. This is the first computer at LaFargeville that students are
allowed to take home.
"We are really excited about all the new equipment and software
that we would not normally be able to afford. Thank you for making this
possible."

WHAT YOU HAVE TO SAY - One of our customers recently emailed us
at NorthNet with the following comments about his experience with us:
"I am just one of your many faceless customers out here, but I
am just constantly amazed by you guys and what a super service NorthNet
is!
"What would life be like if you had an I.S.P. that would
actually let you talk to someone in person from 9:00 A.M. to 10:00 P.M.
to assist you regarding your Internet problems? What, further, would it
be like if you received answers that didn't tell you that you need to
go to Microsoft.com or a 'help' menu, etc. to find your answers? Does
it seem impossible that you can be treated like a human being on the
phone any more? And what if there were an I.S.P. that the common to
poor person could actually afford? We would all say 'impossible' right?
"Not so! www.northnet.org is the ultimate in I.S.P.s! They are
the greatest thing going since Al Gore 'invented the internet!' The
staff is polite and really care! From a panic call to them regarding
how to install a program to what to do about a recent virus infection.
The team at NorthNet is always there to assist their customers in every
aspect of using a computer.
"I can't help myself here...I'm a happy camper! I have never
been treated so nice and efficiently by anyone on the phone, (since Al
Gore invented the phone) as I have been treated by (the Systems
Administrator) and his crew of techies at NorthNet!"

LEARN FROM THE NET - Personal Computer Columnist Reid
Goldsborough has some tips where you can turn to on the Internet to
learn about the Internet.
"Yahoo How-To: A Tutorial for Web Surfers, at
http://howto.yahoo.com, does a good job of covering the basics with
easy-to-follow instructions. Unfortunately, when explaining a subject
such as chat services, Yahoo How-To often lists Yahoo's own offerings
first or even exclusively, which detracts from the site's objectivity
and usefulness."
